Bougie Beer

Peru_10_2014_3735

In Arequipa, Peru, my friend and I stopped into this cute local organic coffee and chocolate shop but wound up buying super bougie beer instead. Coffee-infused (the dark one) and quinoa-infused (the light one). We both agreed the quinoa beer was the winner.

Fourth of July BBQ

Queue the debate re: BBQ v. Cookout. It’s a BBQ.

Because Blue Moon wasn’t gay enough, we had to get the box with Agave Blonde and the Expressionist Collection styles. Obviiiiiii.

Sorry Chicago hot dogs, I cheated on you. They were tasty, but they’ll never make me feel the way you do. I still love you.

Culinary Tour of Asia in New York

I went to visit my good friend, The Squeaky Robot, in New York, and we decided to do a culinary tour of Asia for the weekend. Who doesn’t love Asian food, seriously?

Green tea

Our first meal was at Ippudo for some epic ramen. Ippudo roughly translates to “eccentric dining hall,” and what an apt name that is. As you walk into the main dining hall, the hostess announces you, and you are greeted by cheers of “Irasshaimase!” (or “Welcome” in Japanese). Carefully and beautifully decorated, with great service, and fantastically authentic ramen, Ippudo is a must for any ramen lover visiting New York. They also gave free green tea at the end of the meal.

For dinner, we went to a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown and got Shanghai soup dumplings (omfg if you’ve never had these, go and find the closest place that serves ’em), scallion pancakes, tiny buns, and mapo tofu (another favorite of mine). We eat so much, so fast. I thought I was gonna die in a glorious state of fat-happy-Buddha-nirvana. I didn’t manage any photos, mostly because the lighting was awful, but also because we couldn’t let the food just sit there and not be in our stomachs.

Malaysian curry short ribs with grilled lettuce

The next day, we went to a Southeast Asian restaurant called Cafe Asean in the West Village. We inhaled some Vietnamese iced coffee, Singaporean hawker noodles, and Malaysian curry short ribs with grilled lettuce. It was pretty perfect. Later for dinner, we went for Korean food. Bibimbap, whattupppp?

Rock shrimp and sweet potato tempura

On my last day in the city, we went for tempura, sushi, and beer in the Upper East Side. Didn’t get any sushi photos because they weren’t very photogenic and the lighting was bad, but they were pretty decent. Nom.

Almost done!

The Sapporo Beer Garden in Sapporo, Japan has several restaurants offering this dish that the Japanese find so ridiculous that they named it after Genghis Khan. What is it? Just lots of meat that you cook yourself. Basically a Mongolian Barbeque. As an American, I think it’s funny that the amount of meat they serve is considered ridiculous. (There was a little more than can be seen in this photo, but not much.) I like my meat, damnit! Ridiculous, indeed.

It was pretty damn good though, that’s worth mentioning.

Kirin, named after a mythical unicorn thing, is a Japanese beer. It’s my favorite beer on the market. Drink it, responsibly of course. Japantown, San Francisco, CA, USA

Tsingtao

Tsingtao, or Qingdao, is a delicious light Chinese beer. It is, perhaps one of the most famous Asian beer. Chinatown, New York City, New York, USA

Brown Bagged Beer

In the US, you’re not allowed to have alcohol in public unless the label is covered, so most people use a simple brown bag. Ain’t nothin’ like drinkin’ a cold beer in a random alley way in New York City, NY, USA!
