Dried alpaca ham delicately resting on grilled sharp cheese and wrapped in a corn husk. Soccollay, Arequipa, Peru

Adobo

Peru_10_2014_3933We made a friend at a bar in Arequipa, Peru, and the next day he picked us up from our hostel and took us to his neighborhood to try adobo – a traditional breakfast of pork soup. The restaurant appeared to be out of someone’s dining room. I could get used to this savory goodness for breakfast every day.

Maracuya Sour

Peru_10_2014_3897Passion fruit and pisco: a match made in heaven. Enjoyed on a rooftop bar in Arequipa, Peru as the sun set.

Alpaca Steak on Volcanic Rock

Spiced and tender alpaca steaks cooked on a volcanic rock. From the pre-Inkan menu of Soccollay in Arequipa, Peru.

Swordfish Ceviche in Passionfruit Juice

Peru_10_2014_4085When ceviche was first “invented” about 2000 years ago, it was marinated in passionfruit juice instead of lime juice. The passionfruit juice really brought out the flavor of the soft and tender swordfish, and the seaweed was so fresh it had small snail shells caught up in it. Absolutely wonderful dish from Soccollay in Arequipa, Peru.

Bougie Beer

Peru_10_2014_3735

In Arequipa, Peru, my friend and I stopped into this cute local organic coffee and chocolate shop but wound up buying super bougie beer instead. Coffee-infused (the dark one) and quinoa-infused (the light one). We both agreed the quinoa beer was the winner.

A popular take on ice cream in Arequipa, Peru. It’s creamy with a faint hint of cinnamon, coconut, condensed milk, and egg. Sooo good!
